In “Tanam Harapan”, John Raymond simplified the shape of “clouds” from Mega Mendung batik motifs with his own signature abstract lines. Inspired by the thick clouds in the Mega Mendung pattern that symbolizes hope for rain to fall in order to irrigate and fertilize agriculture, John Raymond reflects on the country’s current climate. Indonesia is made of agrarian culture, yet we still have to import our own rice, which indicates the lack of proper management in our agricultural sector. Through this work, John Raymond sheds light on the important matter, to remind ourselves how much we need to raise awareness on the development of Indonesia’s agriculture.

The lines, curves, and flow in this artwork radiates a slow rhythm. A flowing expression similar to the absorption of the life process with a long reflection. His abstracts does not take up the entire canvas, instead leaving an empty space for beauty, serenity, and happiness. His work uncover the nuances of self-reflection that produces a sense of stillness. He has participated in several group exhibitions since 2018.
